Tender for Angola’s largest port extended due to COVID-19 pandemic

Authorities in Angola have extended the deadline for concession bids for the Port of Luanda Multipurpose Terminal, according to reports from Chinese state media.

News outlet Xinhua has reported that country’s Concession Evaluation Commission announced last week that the deadline for concession bids will be pushed back to 30 June as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The tender began in December 2019 and was originally due to be completed by 30 March. However, due to the crisis brought on by the pandemic, which has severely restricted movement across the globe and caused businesses to amend plans.

By opening up the tender, the Angolan government wants to improve the Port of Luanda Multipurpose Terminal’s connectivity with the global supply chain.

Its goal is to use the Port of Luanda Multipurpose Terminal as a means of economic development for the rest of the country, and is seeking out “seasoned private firms” to do so.

The Port of Luanda Multipurpose Terminal, is a port infrastructure dedicated to the simultaneous operation of general cargo and containers, has a pier of 610 meters, a depth of 12.5 meters and has an area of 181,070 square meters with capacity for move 2.6 million tons per year.

It is currently able to accommodate general cargo and containers, with 2.6 million tons passing through it every year.

The winning concession will be applicable for 20-25 years.
