New York court gives Maersk green light for terminal switch

A.P. Moeller-Maersk’s (Maersk) plans to transfer three services from to APM Temerinals (APMT) Elizabeth, New Jersey, will go ahead after a US court rejected attempts from Global Container Terminals (GCT) to stop it.

Maersk, the largest container shipping line in the world, confirmed to Port Technology International (PTI) that it had received the ruling on 24 April.

The carrier also said that its goal is to achieve “better operational efficiency” after spending $200 million to upgrade APMT Elizabeth.

PTI reported when GCT confirmed it had sought an injunction against Maersk’s plans to withdraw from the service agreement, which was due to run until the end of 2021.

GCT claimed in court that Maersk’s wanted to change the service 20 months before the contract could be terminated, amid fears the new schedule could cost 100 jobs.

However, it has been reported that Maersk offered GCT compensation in the region of $5 million.

The terminal operator will reportedly appeal the ruling and pursue all legal avenues open to it.
