Shanghai container volumes climb amid COVID-19 crisis

The Port of Shanghai has seen year-on-year increase in container throughput up to 15.35 million TEU during the first four months of this year – recovering from last month’s plunge caused by the COVID-19 outbreak.

The figure represents a 1.8 per cent surge compared to volumes handled last year.

As for April 2022, the container throughput at the Port of Shanghai has exceeded 3.08 million TEU – recovering by 82.4 per cent year-on-year, a transport official said on 11 May.

China initially shut down on 28 March, however, the Port of Shanghai has remained open throughout.

Closed manufacturing sites and warehouses as well as a reduction in available trucking capacity caused delays across the supply chain, as reported by Ocean Network Express (ONE), CMA CGM, and MSC amongst other companies.

The Federation of European Private Port Companies and Terminals (FEPORT) recently launched a call for clarity on the ever-increasing vessel backlog in Shanghai.

With its container throughput exceeding 47 million TEU in 2021, the Shanghai Port ranked as the world’s busiest port for 12 consecutive years and as China’s best port in PTI’s list of ‘Top 10 Ports in China 2021’.
