Maersk Dyros heads to Lazaro Cardenas for inspection

The Maersk-chartered vessel that suffered container loss and damage earlier this month has been diverted to Lazaro Cardenas for inspection.

On 21 March, the 4,578 TEU Dyros box ship lost a large portion of its contents in the North Pacific Ocean due to rough weather conditions. Approximately nine of these containers were labelled dangerous cargo and were carrying lithium-ion batteries packed with equipment.

Approximately another 100 containers were damaged while no crew members were injured, a Maersk representative told PTI.

In a customer update, Maersk wrote that the vessel has been diverted to Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico, due to arrive 3 April.

“The vessel will undergo a safety inspection by authorities prior to berthing. Post assessment and upon approval, berthing plans will be finalised to come alongside. Once alongside damage assessment will be conducted that will steer the cargo recovery operation, that normally commences slowly to ensure safety of vessel, underlying cargo and crew,” the advisory wrote.

Maersk plans to retain the unimpacted containers onboard for further on carriage to destination. However, this will depend on the extent of damage to the vessel and the time it will entail to complete the repairs before the vessel can resume the voyage.

The vessel was en-route to Seattle, US from Yantian, China.

In October last year the ZIM Kingston lost over 100 containers in the Pacific Northwest following a fire that started onboard.
