BPA targets 23.5 million TEU in year ahead

The Busan Port Authority (BPA) has outlined its goals and major plans for 2022 to strengthen the competitiveness of the Port of Busan.

The strategic goals were based on 83 core task reports and 130 general task reports submitted by each division of the port authority.

Senior officials then went on to select 11 tasks for the port to work towards in 2022, aligning with its management goals and strategic directions.

Overall, the tasks will help achieve its four main strategic goals, which include:

Innovating to create port values for the future
By the end of 2022, the BPA aims to have processed 23.5 million TEU, an increase of 3.5 per cent over 2021’s container handling figures. On top of this, it also seeks to establish smart port infrastructure and become a leading port in research and development.

Strengthening port competitiveness
This will require improving port operational efficiency and increasing volumes and employment based on added values created at port district parks. Furthermore, the BPA also plans to secure a shared logistics centre for Korean companies in major overseas regions.

Realising BPA-style ESG
This includes achieving zero serious accidents based on safety management, improving the environment and satisfying the public through ESG management, and bringing vitality to the port-related industries for shared growth with SMEs.

Advancing a customer-centred management system
Lastly, to achieve this goal, the BPA is looking to revitalise its local economy based on the North Port Redevelopment Project and satisfy customers while maintaining its Integrity Institution status.

“I ask you to work to achieve the 11 major strategic tasks without any disruption,” said Kang Joon-suk, CEO of the BPA.

“Moreover, let’s make Busan Port a more competitive shipping and logistics hub, achieving the authority’s establishment purpose of contributing to the national economy.”

Earlier this year, the BPA also concluded a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with KT and Sea Bank, agreeing to develop new technologies to keep the port safe.

All parties signed the MoU of 30 September 2021 and agreed to collaborate on a pilot service for an IoT distress notification system in an attempt to ensure safety at the Port of Busan.
