Terminal operations suspended as Ningbo-Zhoushan reels from COVID-19 outbreak

Operations at the Port of Ningbo-Zhoushan have been suspended following a positive COVID-19 case.

A dock staff member at the east China Zhejiang Province port tested positive for coronavirus on 11 August 2021, local authorities said.

State news agency Xinhua said operations at the relevant site have been suspended and the area has been disinfected.

“We have received a preliminary report from the Ningbo Meishan Terminal, China, where a COVID-19 case was detected among the port operators,” liner Hapag-Lloyd wrote to customers in an update.

It has been reported that the terminal suspended its operations in the early hours of 11 August 2021 when the case was detected, Hapag-Lloyd continued.

“With this sudden suspension, we expect a delay in planned sailings that might affect your cargo planning,” the liner added.

“Please know that we are working on alternatives, and hope for your understanding on a matter that is beyond our control.”

The Ningbo-Zhoushan port ranks first in the world in terms of cargo throughput.

Supply chains have been crippled by COVID-19 outbreaks at major ports and terminals around the world since the beginning of the pandemic.

Disruptions continue in China, and in Vietnam when on 5 August 2021 Hapag-Lloyd announced that container terminals at Tan Cang Cat Lai Port in Ho Chi Minh City, South Vietnam, suspended container imports in a bid to clear a backlog caused by a COVID-19 outbreak in the area.
