JNPT leads India’s pandemic recovery

The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) saw its TEU traffic increase by 7.61% year-on-year (YoY) in November as the Indian economy continued to recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The JNPT said it handled 413,737 TEU in November. Additionally, it also processed 5.7 million tonnes of cargo, a YoY increase of 9.04%.

It also said efficiency levels improved, with terminal handling time of trains dropping to 4 hours and 28 minutes in November from 4 hours and 48 minutes in October and 6 hours and 18 minutes in September.

The newly opened Centralized Parking Plaza at JNPT handled 43,619 tractors in November which carried 68,909 TEU.

Shri Sanjay Sethi, IAS, Chairman, JNPT, said, “JNPT will continue to support the country’s economic growth and perform its duties to maintain the growth trajectory of the port sector.

“The growth in cargo handling volumes in November indicate recovery and these trends will continue into the last quarter of the present financial year.”

Sethi also said JNPT has managed to maintain operations throughout the pandemic while increasing improvements in operational efficiency and cargo handling and trade.

In November, JNPT completed the construction of a coastal berth with a capacity to handle 2.5 million tonnes of cargo including as it looks to provide world class amenities and improve trade facilities.

JNPT has long been the busiest port in India but in August 2020 it was overtake by the Port of Mundra for TEU processed in the first quarter as the pandemic caused congestion and delay.
