Gdynia Container Terminal reaches 4 million TEU milestone

The Polish Port of Gdynia has handled 4 million TEU since the operations began at the Gdynia Container Terminal (GCT) in 2006.

The container that allowed the Port to reach this milestone was unloaded from the MV Durande from the NPX (North Sea Poland Express) Hapag-Lloyd service on 5 November (pictured).

The GCT is operated by Hutchison Ports which has carried out numerous investment programmes in the Port since 2005.

Hutchison Ports Gdynia is located at Bułgarskie Wharf in the Port of Gdynia and covers a total land area of 19.6 hectares with access to 812m of the total 17,200m of quay at the Port. GCT holds the title to perpetual usufruct of the land until December 2089.

GCT owns Bułgarskie Wharf with a length of 620m, including 523m for container load-on/load-off operations. Currently, GCT offers 362m of the quay with a depth of 13.5m alongside and 450m of the quay with a depth of up to 11m alongside.

Upon completion of the modernization of 85m of the quay and the dredging of the port channel to 16.0 meters, GCT will offer 447 meters of the quay with a depth of 15.5m alongside and 365m of the quay with a depth of up to 11m alongside.

Of the equipment at GCT there are two super-post-Panamax ship-to-shore gantry cranes (STS) with 65 t twin-lift capacity and 61 m outreach. There are four additional STS cranes of varying size.

There are also seven electric rubber tiered gantry cranes (RTG) and four standard RTGs.

The furnishing of the container terminal is ongoing and Hutchison says it will be based on development schedules and market conditions.
