Port of Busan to establish smart maintenance system

The Busan Port Authority (BPA) has concluded an agreement to establish a smart maintenance system facility at the Port of Busan as it looks to accelerate the digitisation of its facilities.

In a statement the BPA said the announcement concludes the process that began with a memorandum of understanding (MoU), which it signed with four other stakeholders, including the Korean Maritime and Oceans University, Busan Metropolitan City, Dong-A University and Busan Technopark.

The project, according to the BPA, is in line with the government’s Digital New Deal Initiative, a $62 billion project to invest in artificial intelligence, 5G, blockchain and big data technologies.

The partners will work together to establish a data system for the smart maintenance of port facilities and to preemptively secure data usage basis that can be utilized for the maintenance of port facilities in the long run, according to the BPA.

Furthermore, the BPA is planning to “actively support” the process by providing testbed for the port facility maintenance system, in establishing a foundation for the system adoption, and in cooperating for the promotion of the relevant systems.

CEO Nam Ki-chan said, “BPA is implementing Busan Port’s sustainable development strategies in line with the Digital New Deal and Green New Deal Initiatives.

“The adoption of smart management system for port facilities will work as an opportunity for new innovation.”
