COVID-19 forces ZPMC to find new ways to deliver STS cranes

Port equipment manufacturer ZPMC has delivered ship-to-shore (STS) cranes to two European terminals – CMA CGM Dunkerque and HWL Stockholm Norvik – as it continues to expand its presence in the region, despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

The deliveries, which both involved two STS cranes, were made on 9 June and 25 May respectively. In both instances the cranes arrived at their destinations several weeks earlier but COVID-19 restrictions delayed formal handover.

In the case of the CMA CGM Dunkerque the cranes arrived in 3 April but the delivery team from China were not allowed to enter France due to a travel ban imposed to stop the spread of coronavirus.

The five-strong delivery team were only allowed into France after length negotiations between the terminal and local government. The first crane was accordingly delivered on the 27 May and the second on 9 June.

Similarly, ZPMC arrived at the Stockholm Norvik terminal on 18 March and had to work closely alongside local unions and partners to ensure formal handover of the STS cranes.

The COVID-19 pandemic has made delivering port equipment a challenge and ZPMC, the largest manufacturer in the world, has had to work closely with local bodies to ensure safe transfer for most of 2020.
