Hutchison’s latest terminal welcomes first vessel

Stockholm Norvik Port, Sweden’s new freight terminal, welcomed its first container ship on 27 May 2020, the Unifeeder SCA Tunadel, as the country looks to increase its regional maritime presence.

In a statement, Ports of Stockholm said the arrival is the result of a “long and well planned port construction project”.

“It is a fantastic feeling to be able at last to open Stockholm Norvik Port and to know that we can now assure the sustainable transport of goods to and from the greater Stockholm region for many, many years to come,” states Johan Wallén, Marketing and Sales Manager at Ports of Stockholm.

The terminal will be run by Hong Kong-based operator Hutchison Ports, which already has a presence in 52 ports in 27 countries.

“We are looking forward to being able to offer our customers the best possible service, at a newly built port that provides an efficient port infrastructure and state-of-the-art equipment,” explains Lawrence Yam, CEO, Hutchison Ports Stockholm.

Sweden’s international trade is dependent on the sea, with 90% of imports and exports arriving through one of its ports. Additionally, Stockholm accounts for for 50% of the country’s consumption, making the region vitally important.

The opening of Stockholm Norvik Port increases the opportunities to transport goods by sea as close to their final destination as possible. It will provide “modern and efficient transport solutions” through its proximity to the major shipping fairways, a natural depth of 16.5 metres, and good land infrastructure connections, including a newly built railway line.
