DA wants GPS tracking on I-70 pileup truck driver out on bail

Colorado prosecutors have asked for GPS tracking to be placed on a truck driver who walked out of jail on a $400,000 bond after allegedly causing a massive pileup crash that killed four people last month.

On Monday, May 20, prosecutors with the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office filed a motion to place a GPS tracking device on 23 year old truck driver Rogel Lazaro Aguilera-Mederos, who bonded out of jail over the weekend. He was able to afford to bond out because of donations made on online fundraising sites, according to his family.
The District Attorney’s Office says that the request came after investigators learned that Aguilera-Mederos attempted to flee the sense of the fatal crash:
“The People’s investigation has revealed that the Defendant attempted to flee the scene of the collision, this was previously unknown at the time of the original bond setting.”

The judge has not yet responded to the prosecution’s request for GPS tracking.

Aguilera-Mederos was asked to surrender his passport as part of his bond, but his lawyer said that the passport was destroyed in the fiery crash on I-70.
Aguilera-Mederos is facing 36 felony and 4 misdemeanor charges for his role in an April 25 crash on I-70 in Lakewood, Colorado. The crash involved 24 passenger vehicles and 4 semi trucks and left four people dead.

Aguilera-Mederos later told police via translator that his brakes had failed.
Aguilera-Mederos is set to appear in court again on July 11.
