Panama Canal unveils new COVID-19 measures

The Panama Canal Authority has introduced a series of new measures to protect its employees and customers from the COVID-19, or coronavirus, pandemic.

In a statement, the authority said it will create new teams with the right level of staff in order to maintain the safe operation of the waterway.

These teams will be transferred to and from their place of work in special transport to reduce the risk of infection. Additionally, shifts will established to ensure that workers are rested.

The authority said the measures are “in addition to those that have already been implemented to protect employees, customers and crew of ships in transit since the announcement of the global alert for COVID-19”.

It went further and said that the new measures were “in accordance with Panama Canal regulations and recommendations from the Ministry of Health of Panama (MINSA) and the World Health Organization.”
