Mindanao Container Terminal acquires first hybrid equipment

Mindanao Container Terminal (MCT), International Container Terminal Services, Inc.’s (ICTSI) container handling facility in Misamis Oriental, recently took delivery of two Mitsui hybrid rubber tired gantries (RTG)–the first in Mindanao.

The new deliveries will boost yard productivity and overall terminal efficiency without adding to the terminal’s carbon footprint.

The Mitsui hybrids are powered by a combination of a lithium-ion battery and a smaller diesel engine, unlike conventional RTGs that 100 percent run on fossil fuel.

“The hybrid RTGs make our operations more efficient and at the same time more environment friendly because of the reduced emissions, allowing us to hit both our productivity and sustainability targets,” said Aurelio Garcia, MCT General Manager.

By the first half of 2023, MCT will also install a mobile harbour crane to improve vessel-handling capability.

The new equipment follows the 100-meter berth extension and installation of dolphin mooring and inland bollards back in 2020. As the global economy begins to recover from the pandemic, these improvements are aimed at addressing the increase in volume and service demand.

ICTSI published its audited consolidated financial results for calendar year 2021.

ICTSI’s net income reached $477.54 million in 2021, up 242 per cent over $139.64 million the previous year.

The company handled 11,163,473 TEU in 2021, an increase of 10 per cent compared to 10,193,384 TEU in 2020.
