UK terminal operator signs deal with Damen for next-gen tug boat

UK terminal operator Forth Ports Limited has signed a contract with Damen Shipyards Group for a next generation ASD Tug 2312.

According to a statement, the deal was unveiled at a signing ceremony in Tilbury Docks on 26 February, 2020. Damen was represented by Area Director Frank de Lange, and Forth Ports by its COO Stuart Wallace.

Forth Ports said the new vessel will assist its current operations, in particular in the Forth and Tay Estuaries, as well as help it tap into new markets, such as decommissioning and offshore energy.

What are the top five ports in the UK?
The vessel, which has a bollard pull of 70 tonnes, is “extremely powerful” and is well suited to the environments Forth Ports works in.

It also has improved safety features, such as its wheelhouse, which offers 86% window coverage and impact resistant safety glass.

Damen also says there are environmental benefits to be had as the vessel has a NOx Reduction system that makes it fully compliant with IMO regulations.

“We are delighted with this order from Forth Ports,” said Mike Besijn, Damen Sales Manager.

“The ASD Tug 2312 is a tug for the future that I am sure will serve them well in the years to come.

“Forth Ports has carefully evaluated their vessel requirements for both their current and future plans around fleet renewal and we are delighted that they have selected Damen for this replacement tug and we look forward to a long and growing relationship with Forth Ports.”

Alan McPherson, Chief Harbour Master at Forth Ports also commented: “We are very pleased to be working with Damen on the delivery of the 2312 to Forth Estuary Towage as we replace older tonnage and significantly increase our towage fleet capability.

“The team at Damen have worked closely with us to deliver a very capable vessel for the operations we undertake and our staff are looking forward to this type of tug within our fleet.

“I look forward to building our relationship with Damen in the coming years.”
