Hutchison Ports Barcelona terminal bolsters container capacity
The Port of Barcelona Management Board has approved €60 million ($68 million) for increased capacity at Hutchison Ports BEST.
Hutchison will invest €31 million ($35.1 million) to increase its container block capacity from 27 to 34, increasing capacity by 26% or 700,000 TEU.
The remaining €29 million ($32.8 million) will be invested in machinery, including 14 new automated cranes.

Works will commence by 1 May 2022.
BEST currently operates on 80 hectares of land on the Prat wharf, with a 1,500-metre wharf and a depth of water level of 16.5m.
The terminal currently has 13 Post-Panamax dock cranes capable of handling mega-vessels, in addition to 54 automated cranes and 34 shuttle carriers.
The Port of Barcelona moved 3.2 million TEU in November, a 21.6% increase on 2020 levels.
