HHLA PLT terminal Trieste welcomes first container vessel

Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG’s (HHLA) multi-purpose terminal Piattaforma Logistica Trieste (PLT) has welcomed its first container vessel, handling CMA CGM’s OPS Hamburg.

The OPS Hamburg berthed at the terminal as part of CMA CGM’s TMX3 service which connects Turkey with the Adriatic Sea on a weekly basis. The vessel was handled fast and efficiently, according to HHLA.

“We were delighted to welcome the OPS Hamburg at our terminal. Undoubtedly a good omen, the name of the vessel recalls the link between Trieste and our majority shareholder HHLA in Hamburg,” said Antonio Barbara, Managing Director of HLLA PLT.

“It will inaugurate a new regular CMA CGM service – the TMX3 to connect Turkey with HHLA PLT Italy in Trieste Port. This TMX3 service represents an important step forward for our terminal. We would like to thank CMA CGM for choosing HHLA PLT Italy.”

The terminal is an important part of the Italian seaport of Trieste and consists of an area for the handling of assorted break bulk and a newly built area that provides berths deep enough for RoRo and container ships.

Paolo Lo Bianco, Managing Director CMA CGM Italy, added “The TMX3 service offers one of the best-in-class transit times between Western Turkey and North Adriatic – Italy and Slovenia – with a journey of 3.5 days from Gemlik to Trieste and of 4 days from Gemlick to Koper.

“It represents a sustainable alternative to truck transportation reducing CO2 emissions, with optimised lead time, frequency, and costs. Moreover, door-to-door intermodal solutions including 45’ PW container complement the sea product.”

HHLA PLT previously opened a new terminal gateway at the Port of Trieste. Announced in September 2021, the gate is equipped with self-service checkpoints and multilingual interfaces. Additionally, the gate has two lanes for incoming traffic and two for outgoing traffic.
