The Port of Valencia sees leap in container throughput

Cargo throughput at the Port of Valencia exceeded one million containers over the past 12 months and increased by 17.85% and unloading by 16.18% during the month of September 2021.

In its monthly report, the Valencia Port Authority (PAV) revealed that full container traffic dedicated to imports had grown by 42.3% for September 2021, while exports had grown by 17.2%.

The trend is also reflected in its year-on-year data, as for the period of October 2020 to September 2021, 1,084,356 TEU of export containers were said to have been processed, a 17.8% increase when compared to the same period of October 2019 to September 2020. On top of this, import figures also reached 810,735, TEU a 16.2% increase on the previous year.

Between the period of January to September 2021, a total of 813,114 TEU in exports were moved through the docks at Valenciaport, increasing by 9.9% when compared to the same period in 2020. Imports reached 618,719 TEU, an increase of 18.6%.

China remains the ports leading trading partner with 461,201 TEU moved through this period, 20.6% more than in 2020. The US came in as the port’s second-biggest trading partner with 404,321 TEU, an increase of 5.04%, closely followed by Turkey with 236,153 TEU, an increase of 4.35%.

This follows on from the port’s container handling figures in August 2021, which saw it handle 3,000 export containers a day, reaching a total of 89,745 TEU. During the period of September 2020 to August 2021, Valenciaport handled 5,704,033 TEU and more than 500,000 containers more than the previous timeframe, indicating a 9.85% growth.
