Petrolesport implements high-speed cellular communications

Petrolesport (PLP), part of the Global Ports Group, has teamed up with Russian digital service providers Rostelecom to implement a new digital infrastructure at the terminal utilising a high-speed data transfer network to support the use of mobile devices.

The terminal, located at the Port of St. Petersburg, installed base station equipment at a height of 35m which ensures the uninterrupted operation of mobile devices throughout the terminal.

“Hundreds of mobile devices are simultaneously involved in operations at the terminal,” said Alexey Ermolin, CEO of Global Ports. “The configuration of the communication signal coverage changes depending on the distribution of containers and other cargo throughout the territory, which complicates the operation of Wi-Fi networks.

“The launch of the new base station together with Rostelecom will enable us to partially phase out the use of Wi-Fi and provide extended measures will increase the speed up and convenience of accounting for cargo when handling vessels and vehicles and carrying out yard operations.”

Dmitry Konoplev, Director of the Department for Work with High Profile Customers at the North-West Macroregional Branch of Rostelecom, added “Before building a base station on Gladkiy Island, Rostelecom’s technical specialists tested cellular communications. There were many blind spots on the port territory, which hindered the operations of our customer.

“Together with Global Ports, we decided to build up the communications infrastructure and determined the parameters of the equipment – and now, the construction of the tower has been successfully completed.”

Global Ports has also recently launched a digital document system that is now being used at PLP, as well as the First Container Terminal (FCT). The new system allows for the exchange of legally significant documents and the remote issuance of passes, therefore reducing time costs and minimising paperwork for all participants of the process.
