Sohar Port and Freezone strikes agreement for new quay wall

The Sohar Port and Freezone has signed a development agreement with Moon Iron and Steel Company SAOC (MISCO) for the construction of a 700m quay wall.

In a statement, the Port said the quay wall will be located in the eastern area of the facility and work is due to begin at the end of December 2021.

Commenting on the agreement, Mark Geilenkirchen, CEO of the Sohar Port and Freezone, said, “In our journey towards becoming a key logistics hub in the region, we continue our endeavors to attract potential businesses to Sohar.

“In line with our vision, we aim to utilise the available land as an extension of the current Steel and Logistics Cluster. We also seek to keep an eye out for industries that could further develop and strengthen the overall portfolio of services, provided by the Port.

“This way, we can facilitate the growth of the existing industries and tenants, alongside accommodating new types of services, industries and products. In addition, we will see the generation of 250 local job opportunities upon completion of the plant.”

Sasikumar Moorkanat, MD& CEO of MISCO, also commented, “With the construction of the land and quay wall for the new plant, we will be able to facilitate the handling of direct reduced iron as raw material for producing steel, as well as hot-rolled coil, which can be used for engineering applications, including pipe manufacturing, cold rolling, galvanising, structural fabrication and more.”

Hutchison Ports told PTI in March 2021 that the proposed expansion of the Port of Sohar will be a key part of Oman Vision 2040 and help it improve the country’s status as a supply chain and logistics hub by enabling it to handle the largest vessels in the world
