Maersk vessel loses several hundred containers between China and US

Several hundred containers have been lost overboard from the ‘Maersk Eindhoven’ after encountering bad weather while en route from Xiamen, China, to Los Angeles, US.

According to A.P. Moller-Maersk (Maersk), the vessel’s engine stopped near Japan on 17 February 2021. The carrier said it cannot yet say for certain how many or which customers’ cargo were affected.

“We are awaiting further updates from the vessel regarding potentially lost or damaged containers and will share the details once available,” Maersk said in a statement.

“All crew members have been reported to be safe and the ship’s propulsion has been restored.

“We are currently assessing nearest suitable port options in Asia to berth the vessel and will keep you informed of the port location decision and timing.”

A separate statement from MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), Maersk’s 2M Alliance partner, said it was not yet clear if any of its containers were affected, but said the overall loss was several hundred containers.

The loss comes just over a month since the last major container loss at seas. On 16 January Maersk lost 750 containers from the ‘Maersk Essen’ in the North Pacific, once again between the ports of Xiamen and Los Angeles, during heavy seas.
