Port of Tanjung Pelepas receives four ultra large container vessel STS cranes

The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) has taken delivery of four new Super Post Panamax ultra large container vessel (ULCV) ship-to-shore (STS) quay cranes as it continues its efforts to optimise services and capacity.

In a statement, PTP said the STS cranes arrived on 1 June and form part of a purchase agreement signed with ZPMC in April 2019, which included eight machines in total.

The remaining four will arrive in the third quarter 2020, and bring the total number of STS cranes in operation at PTP to 66, of which 24 are Triple-E compliant.

As one of the most technologically advanced ports in the world, PTP is fast becoming one of the most important hubs for trade and digital connectivity in the maritime industry.

It has broken the vessel utilisation record three times in the past two years, the most recent being in 2019 when it handled the MSC Gulsun, then the biggest vessel in the world.

It already has plans to utilise AI and other exponential technologies in it operations and in October 2019 announced plans to more than double its TEU capacity from 12.5 million to 30 million.

This latest addition of equipment capability, it says, is “a clear demonstration that PTP is one of the best equipped and most technologically advanced terminals in the region” and demonstrates the aspiration to meet the market demand and thereby becoming the preferred port of choice in the region.
