Port of Mobile enjoys continued growth in container volumes

The Alabama State Port Authority (ASPA) has released its April 2022 results for container volumes through the Port of Mobile – posting a 39.7 per cent increase year-on-year.

The port’s container intermodal transfer facility registered a 112.6 per cent growth in April compared to April 2021 volumes handled, while refrigerated cargo saw a 57.9 per cent year-on-year gain.

This latest report follows eight straight months of container volume growth at the Port of Mobile.

As container volumes continue to climb, the port authority has invested to add capacity and efficiency for shippers at its gateway.

In March this year, the U.S. Department of Transportation granted the ASPA and the Mobile Airport Authority (MAA) a combined $100 million.

Under the grant, the ASPA will received $38 million to leverage freight movement efficiencies. Planned investment includes a new inter-terminal bridge connecting the marine terminal with the intermodal rail facility and the adjacent logistics park.

The port authority also received $67.3 million for intermodal and freight rail infrastructure improvements to facilitate the construction of an inland intermodal transfer facility (ICTF) at Montgomery.

Finally, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey announced the creation of the A-USA Corridor earlier this year – a proposed $231.6 million program of rail projects to upgrade economic development infrastructure in central and southern Alabama.

“It’s rewarding to see the port’s long term strategic vision come to fruition and play a role in driving economic growth throughout the region,” said Beth Branch, ASPA Chief Commercial Officer.

In January, the ASPA released its container volume figures reporting its third-highest lift rate in the container terminal’s history.
