Maersk signs partnership to establish first green e-methanol plant in Southeast Asia
A.P. Moller – Maersk A/S (Maersk) has partnered with five industry firms to build a green e-methanol in Singapore.
The Danish line has joined with PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited, Air Liquide, YTL PowerSeraya Pte. Limited, Oiltanking Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd., Kenoil Marine Services Pte Ltd to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on a ‘Green Methanol Value Chain Collaboration’.
Under the agreement, the six companies will run feasibility studies by the end of 2022 to establish a green e-methanol pilot plant with a minimum capacity of 50,000 tons per annum (TPA).
The new unit will work by converting biogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) into green e-methanol, a low carbon fuel that can help reducing greenhouse gas emissions across the maritime industry.
In their statement, the companies affirmed that: “This MoU marks a pivotal step towards transforming captured biogenic CO2 and green hydrogen produced from renewable electricity into green e-methanol and making this low carbon fuel commercially accessible for the maritime industry.”
The plant will be set up in Singapore and it will be the first of its kind in Southeast Asia.
The Maritime Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) also plans to leverage Singapore’s hub port and research ecosystems to conduct feasibility studies on the set up of a pilot plant and running of bunkering trials on green e-methanol.
The MPA signed a coalition last year to complete Singapore’s first live bunker delivery financing pilot transaction, as part of a drive to promote the port as one of the world’s premier maritime bunkering hubs.
Maersk is forging ahead in establishing greener solutions. Earlier last month, the company signed a partnership with six companies with the intent of sourcing at least 730,000 green methanol TPA by end of 2025.
