DP World opens empty container storage park at the Port of Southampton

DP World has opened a new £3 million ($4 million) empty container storage park spanning 11.5 acres at the Port of Southampton.

The new facility will hold additional empty containers and enable the port to increase storage capacity while maintaining service levels for customers. This will be especially crucial during the forthcoming peak pre-Christmas season.

“The new £3 million empty park is part of DP World’s ongoing £40 million ($54.67 million) investment this year at Britain’s second-largest container terminal – designed to take It up to the next level as a smart logistics hub – which will provide customers with speed, security, reliability and flexibility,” said Ernst Schulze, UK Chief Executive at DP World.

“We now have 25% more storage capacity at Southampton than before which will enable us to maintain productivity and service levels for the vital next few months and beyond.

“Operating two ports at Southampton and London Gateway means that we offer unrivalled flexibility and choice to customers. Volumes can be switched quickly and easily between locations, giving customers more control over their supply chains, and increasing the security of supply for critical goods coming into the UK. No other logistics business can offer this level of flexibility and certainty.”

One further aspect of DP World’s £40 million investment in the port saw the company extend its crane rails. Announced in July 2021, the extension will allow the world’s largest cranes to service the full length of the quay. The 120m crane rail extension now has foundations reaching 26m below the ground and took 16 weeks to build.
