Green energy coalition launches BioLNG project at Port of Marseille Fos

The Coalition for the Energy of the Future has launched a feasibility study at the Port of Marseille Fos to advance the production and use of liquified biomethane (BioLNG) for maritime transportation.

In a statement, the Coalition said it will allow the transformation of household waste from the Metropole Aix-Marseille-Provence into BioLNG, which will then be used to mobility from the Port and CMA CGM’s LNG-powered vessels.

BioLNG combined with CMA CGM vessels’ dual fuel engines will allow the reduction of at least 67% greenhouse gas emissions on a well-to-wake basis along the value chain and by 88% on a tank-to-ship basis.

The project is the latest in a series of initiatives launched by the Coalition, including the production and testing of e-methane for the shipping industry, building green warehouses and distribution centres and developing new biofuels for aviation and other areas of the supply chain.

In addition, Rolls-Royce, Kuehne+Nagel Group and Air Liquide have joined the Coalition, according to a statement.
