Global Ports puts ZPMC-built RMG cranes into operation

Global Ports has put two new rubber-mounted gantry (RMG) cranes into operation at the Vostochnaya Stevedoring Company (VSC), the largest container terminal in Far East Russia.

The company said the RMGs, built by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries (ZPMC), have a capacity of 50 tonnes and span of 32 metres each. This will allow for the stacking of containers 14 rows and a doubling of tier capacity to six tiers.

The equipment has been put into operation in the storage yard, where crane tracks and associated infrastructure have already been renovated and a new fitting surface has been put in place, consisting of special square pedestals designed to withstand the load of containers stacked in six tiers.

The increased capacity in the container yards and the use of new, modern technology will enable VSC to significantly increase its capacity and throughput, Global Ports said.

Aleksey Pavlenko, Managing Director of VSC, said, “The commissioning of these two new RMG cranes was the final stage of the project for the reconstruction of yard areas in zone 6-1, which allowed us to double the container area capacity from 1 432 to 2 716 TEU and increase the total storage capacity of VSC to 25 thousand TEU”.

As part of the next stage of VSC’s operating facility upgrade programme, two similar RMG rail-type gantry cranes with 6+1 storage height will be installed in the land side of berths No. 5-6 in 2021.

The equipment has already been purchased and the crane ways are now being rebuilt for the installation. The total area of the new cargo storage yard will be 38,000 square metres.
