Sea Port of Saint-Petersburg unveils new container measuring tool

The Sea Port of Saint-Petersburg has announced it has integrated a new weight measuring facility into its railway infrastructure in an effort to improve the flow of trade and provide greater insight into its operations.

The weight measuring facility has been developed by ASI corporation and is based on railcar scales RTV-D. The Port said they comply with all current requirements and came with the recommendation by “Russian railway experts”.

The equipment automatically weighs loaded railcars in motion. The results of weighing certain railcars at certain date and time are submitted to the company’s local base.

The weighing equipment is fitted with a video system for car identification. The weighing device is equipped with four high-accuracy strain sensors for tracks complying with GOST 8.647-2015, a Russian state system to ensure uniformity of measurements, particularly on the railways.

The facility has been successfully tested and put into operation, according to the Port. It is the third railway weighing facility in the port. Introduction of the new weight measuring facility will improve operational efficiency.

It is the Port’s latest infrastructure investment designed to improve efficiency and Russia’s standing in the container shipping industry.

In April 2020 it struck a deal with Konecranes to expand its rubber tyred gantry (RTG) crane fleet to 24 by the end of 2020.
