DP World completes £40 million investment at Port of Southampton

DP World has announced that 11 sustainable straddle carriers will go into service at the Port of Southampton with immediate effect.

This latest addition to the port’s equipment portfolio will complete a £40 million ($54.67 million) investment in the container terminal, which has been Britain’s second-busiest in the last 12 months.

The vehicles, which lift containers moved by the quay cranes and then service onward forms of transport via road and rail, aim to support Southampton’s decarbonisation goals as they consume up to 20% less fuel than the diesel-electric powered machines they are set to replace.

“I am delighted to announce the arrival of a new class of 11 hybrid straddle carriers at Southampton, which illustrates once again DP World’s commitment to improving the nation’s trading infrastructure and playing our part in helping the UK Government meet its target of delivering the net-zero 2050 policy,” said Ernst Schulze, Chief Executive of DP World UK.

“The £10 million ($13.59 million) cost of the straddle carriers is part of DP World’s ongoing £40 million investment in Southampton. As these major investments show, we believe in the UK market and have the ambition and the resources to boost growth, support businesses, create jobs and improve living standards.”

On top of this, DP World recently opened a new £3 million ($4 million) empty container storage park at the Port of Southampton. This park holds additional empty containers and has allowed the port to increase its storage capacity while maintaining service levels for customers.

The new 11.5-acre facility also came as part of the £40 million major investment in the port and is designed to upgrade its status as a smart logistics hub – providing its customers with speed, security, reliability, and flexibility.
