Port of New York and New Jersey sees 14.9% increase in cargo volume

The Port of New York and New Jersey moved 780,782 TEU in August 2021, the third-highest monthly volume since the port began tracking cargo activity.

The port saw cargo volume increase by 14.9% compared to August 2019 and increased 2.9% from July 2021.

This comes off the back of the news that in May 2021, the Port of New York and New Jersey experienced nine months of consistent cargo growth.

While the port reached volumes of 18% above pre-pandemic levels, it still predicted a $3 billion loss for the 24 months covering March 2020 and March 2022.

During the pandemic, the port authorised its management to apply for support from the Municipal Liquidity Facility, a program created by the Coronavirus Aid Relief, and Economic Security Act to stablise operations.
